WORD FROM THE CONVENER

The English saying, “knowledge is power” is very relevant in any industry.

To enable them to make informed decisions on a daily basis Farmers need to gain as much knowledge as possible on a continuous basis.

The “Stockman School” is the platform where in a nutshell, participants can get exposure to the latest ideas about breeding in the world. We seek the best local and international speakers to provide their input at the school.

Last year the school was once again fully booked with excellent feedback on the theme of “Feed Efficiency”. This year’s school with the theme, “Meat and Reproduction in the cow herd” will have some of the world’s leading speakers touching on aspects of the entire value chain including animal health, nutrition, pasture management, animal licks, DNA and “genomics”. Practical sessions also include beef and cow selection by Martin Seyfferdt, Chief of the SA Interbreed Evaluation Committee.

There is a void with both producer and consumer of the actual understanding of their product. The “Meat Taste Panel Test” will be a practical afternoon session where the different cuts of meat, their taste and tenderness will be highlighted. This exercise should be very interesting.

There are breeders who annually attend this school and learn something new every year.

I encourage everyone with an interest in the livestock industry to attend these three days. We look forward to welcoming everyone at this year’s presentation.

Die engelse gesegde, “knowledge is power”, is baie relevant in enige bedryf.

Boere moet soveel kennis moontlik inwin op ‘n aaneenlopende basis, om hul in staat te stel om ingeligte besluite op ‘n daaglikse basis te kan maak.

Die Vleisbeesskool is die platvorm waar kursusgangers in ‘n neutedop, blootstelling kan kry aan die nuutse idees oor veeteling in die wereld.  Ons poog om die beste plaaslike en internasionale sprekers te kry om hul insette daar te lewer.

Verlede jaar was die skool weereens vol bespreek met uitstekende terugvoering oor die tema van “Feed Efficiency”.  Hierdie jaar se skool met die tema, “Meat and Reproduction in the cow herd” het van die wêreld se voorste sprekers wat die hele waardeketting soos diere gesondheid, voeding, weidingbestuur, veelekke, DNA en “Genomika” sal aanraak.  Praktiese sessies behels ook bul-en koeiseleksie deur Martin Seyfferdt, Hoof van die SA Interras Beoordelingskomitee.

Daar is ‘n leemte by beide produsent en verbruiker oor die werklike verstaan van hul produk.  Die “Meat Taste Panel Test” gaan ‘n praktiese middagsessie wees waar die verskillende vleissnitte, hul smaak en sagtheid uitgelig gaan word.  Hierdie oefening behoort baie interessant te wees.

Daar is telers wat jaarliks hierdie skool bywoon om dan elke jaar iets nuuts te leer.

Ek moedig almal met ‘n belang in die veebedryf aan om hierdie drie dae by te woon. Ons sien uit daarna om almal by hierdie jaar se aanbieding te verwelkom.
